What makes WAV different from MP3?
WAV (Waveform Audio File Format) is an uncompressed linear pulse code modulation (LPCM) format developed by Microsoft and IBM. Unlike MP3, which uses psychoacoustic perceptual coding to discard audio frequencies above 16kHz–18kHz to reduce file size, WAV preserves 100% of the original audio waveform across all audible frequencies up to 22.05kHz (at 44.1kHz sampling rate).
Why do DJs and audio engineers prefer WAV files?
When mixing tracks or playing on powerful venue speakers, MP3 compression artifacts (such as swishy cymbals or softened sub-bass punch) become noticeable. WAV preserves maximum dynamic headroom and transient definition. Furthermore, digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Ableton and FL Studio perform better when processing uncompressed audio buffers without background decompression CPU overhead.
Can I play WAV files on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Both modern iOS (via Safari and the Files app) and Android (via VLC, Google Files, or native media players) natively decode 16-bit and 24-bit PCM WAV audio. If you download via our Scan to Phone QR code, your mobile device will play the audio seamlessly without requiring third-party audio apps.
Does converting SoundCloud to WAV increase the original quality?
No audio converter can add acoustic detail that was not present in the creator's original audio stream. However, converting to WAV ensures that no further lossy re-encoding occurs during export. You receive the cleanest possible extraction without compounding compression degradation.
